Thesis 5: Fear is not a legitimate instrument of government.

Explanation and justification

Governments that control their populations through fear have lost their moral compass.
Because fear paralyzes, divides and subjugates. It does not lead to maturity, but to obedience – not to responsibility, but to submission. A society that acts out of fear is not acting freely.

Democratic leadership is based on trust, not fear.

Fear as an instrument of power – an old pattern

Throughout history, fear has been used as a political tool:

  • The Inquisition stirred up fear of heresy in order to secure spiritual power.
  • Under National Socialism, fear of “enemies within” was instrumentalized to suspend basic rights.
  • In authoritarian states, fear of the “external enemy” is used to justify oppression.
  • Today, it is fear of disease, terror, climate, social unrest – always combined with the statement: “You are only safe if you obey us.”

Modern forms of fear politics

  • Panic communication in the media and government: shock images, death tolls, apocalyptic scenarios.
  • Generation of social ostracism: Anyone who disagrees risks ostracism, professional loss or defamation in the media.
  • Blackmail through fear: “If you don’t get vaccinated, you’ll lose your job.” – “If you don’t comply, you’ll endanger others.”

These forms of politics are deeply anti-democratic. They prevent debate, block individual consideration and create a climate of powerlessness.

Why fear is so effective – and so dangerous

Fear is an archaic reflex. It narrows the view, paralyzes the mind and makes us seek authority, even if this authority is destructive. Those who are afraid want security – and are prepared to sacrifice freedom for it.

But security based on fear is not real security. It is an illusion – and a surrender of sovereignty.

What a free society needs

  • Courage instead of scaremongering
  • Clarification instead of threats
  • Empathy instead of division
  • Responsibility instead of heteronomy

Government action must be based on reason, transparency and trust. Not shock, guilt and shame.

Our position

We2030 stands for a new political culture based on trust instead of fear. We recognize this: Fear as a means of control is always a sign of weakness – never of legitimate authority.

Fear is not a legitimate instrument of government – it is the tool of tyranny.
