Explanation and justification
A free society thrives on open discourse, the clash of opinions, the competition of ideas. The media play a key role here: they should inform, educate and control – not indoctrinate. They are the unofficial fourth pillar of the separation of powers.
However, when all the major media speak with one voice, when dissent no longer takes place, when alternative points of view are defamed or censored, then the goal is no longer enlightenment – but control. Then the transition to dictatorship begins.
Gleichschaltung does not only mean state censorship. It can also arise through economic power, ideological networks, political dependencies or silent self-censorship. The result is the same: citizens no longer receive the truth, but an orchestrated narrative.
Historical experience
History provides frighteningly clear examples:
- In the Third Reich, all independent newspapers were banned or brought into line. Joseph Goebbels said: “Freedom of the press is the freedom of 200 rich people to spread their opinions.” And by that he meant forcing them to have a single opinion.
- In the GDR, the press, radio and television were controlled directly by the Politburo. Criticism of the government was a criminal offense.
- In modern democracies, the process of conformity is more subtle – through language regulations, incentive systems, lobbyism, “fact checkers”, algorithm control and politically controlled editorial lines.
Signs of today’s synchronization
- Always the same catchphrases in all the major newspapers.
- Defamation of dissenters as “conspiracy theorists”, “enemies of democracy” or “right-wing”.
- Total silence on scientifically based criticism of political decisions.
- Close personal and financial ties between politics, media companies and corporations.
- Dependence of many media on state subsidies or advertising campaigns.
Why this is dangerous
If the media no longer report critically, but instead protect a government line or economic interests, the population loses the opportunity to make informed decisions. A democracy without media diversity is like a body without an immune system – susceptible to any form of manipulation.
And where there is no more control, there is an abuse of power. Not perhaps – but inevitably.
Our position
We2030 demands genuine media diversity, independent journalists, transparent financing and the free dissemination of alternative points of view – without censorship, without repression, without destroying reputations.
Because where the media are aligned, not only does dictatorship begin – it is also defended from there.
