Decisions that affect everyone <strong>must never be made in the shadows<\/strong>. They must be in the public eye &#8211; <strong>justified, scrutinized and discussed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Where debate ends, arbitrariness begins.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why debate is the touchstone of every democracy<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Political decisions are never \u201cwithout alternative\u201d. You must:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>are based on transparent information,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>be publicly justified,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>may be questioned by independent voices,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Leave room for dissent &#8211; even and especially in times of crisis.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If measures &#8211; such as contact bans, school closures, vaccination requirements, restrictions on fundamental rights or surveillance systems &#8211; are <strong>decided or pushed through without open discussion<\/strong>, the state loses its legitimacy as a democratic actor.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Decisions without debate are authoritarian &#8211; even if they look democratic.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What happens when debate is suppressed?<\/h3>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Criticism is defamed (e.g. as \u201clacking solidarity\u201d, \u201cdangerous\u201d, \u201cright-wing\u201d).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Scientists, doctors and lawyers with dissenting opinions are censored or professionally sanctioned.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The media adopt one-sided narratives and fail to ask critical questions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parliaments are disempowered by emergency ordinances and ministerial decrees.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The population is divided into \u201cgood doers\u201d and \u201cbad deniers\u201d.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is no longer democracy &#8211; this is the rule of opinion.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Democracy is not a state of emergency<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Crises are not a justification for dismantling democratic principles &#8211; <strong>they are a test<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially when decisions have a profound impact on people&#8217;s lives, <strong>more discussion<\/strong> is needed <strong>, not less.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How we deal with risks is not a question of biology, but of values.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether a measure is \u201cproportionate\u201d can only be determined through debate.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Whether a decision will stand the test of time depends on whether it can withstand criticism.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our position<\/h3>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We2030 stands for a vibrant, contentious democracy. We demand:<\/p>\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>the return to real debate in Parliament<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the recognition of legitimate scientific diversity<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>the lifting of bans on thought and speech<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>and the reappraisal of authoritarian measures of recent years.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because:<br\/><strong>No democracy without debate.<\/strong><br\/><strong>Any measure without debate is a blow to democracy &#8211; and therefore to us all.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Explanation and justification Democracy thrives on debate &#8211; on the open exchange of different opinions, on public debates, on criticism, counter-speech and correction.
